BACK TO HAWAIIAN
The following is an outline of information about
one of the most famous supernatural phenomenon in the islands, the Night
Marchers.
Po Kane is the night of the God Kane and on that
night the marchers consist
of chiefs, chiefesses, priests and close
attendants. Chiefs are accompanied by the aumakua of the living . They march
to protect those in their paths.
Characteristics
- The chief is carried in a manele (sling)
- The procession is lighted by torches.
- The warlike chiefs are apt to march with and between two warriors
- The caller of the tapu or kapuo goes in front
- Apt to be seen near old temples.
- One hear drums, flutes, laughter as they are playing their favorite
games as if in life.
Po Akua is the 14th night of
the moon and on that night the spirit of chiefs, warriors, aumakua, and the gods march.
( M.K. Puku'i notes in Kepelino 1932 BPBM)
(Huaka'ipo).
- Seen
after sunset and lasts till sunrise.
- Wind will appear to snap off branches of trees. (this was that nothing
impedes the way of the gods nor can anything appear over the god's head)
- Rows of 6 people carrying torches (red), 3 are females, 3 are males
- Associated with bright light, thunder, lightening, and sudden downpour
of rain and or heavy surf.
- The torches are very very bright (for the gods)
