Kukui Grove Exhibition Hall,
Lihu'e
The 22nd Annual Art Kaua'i Exhibition at the
Kukui Grove Exhibition Hall featured 78 artworks selected
from nearly 300 entries submitted by Kaua'i artists. Guest
Juror Candida Alvarez is a graduate of Yale's prestigious
School of Art and an Assistant Professor of Art at the
Chicago Art Institute. Sally French, KSA President,
coordinated the efforts of many volunteers to present the
exhibition (see "Mahalo to Art Kaua'i
Volunteers" below.)
Alvarez, on her first visit to Hawai'i, enjoyed
the challenge of selecting unfamiliar work. She used the
opportunity to form her own "installation piece" with the
works she chose. Through thoughtful placement, the juror
created complex dialogues; making color, shape, line, and
theme connections between diverse pieces. Unusual hanging
heights and ample spaces between artwork gave what the juror
called "important pauses and breathing room between
works."
During an informal talk at the opening
reception, Alvarez said art should challenge convention. In
selecting work and giving awards she looked for pieces that
expressed the personal vision of their creator and those
that revealed deep artistic commitment. Her admitted bias
leaned toward work that suggested a narrative and went
beyond common expectations of "prettiness."
Alvarez created and donated a piece, in memory
of her grandmother, that was auctioned off on opening night.
Alvarez hoped the piece would inspire KSA and future jurors
to find new and creative ways to raise funds for exhibitions
and awards.

MAHALO
TO ART KAUAI
VOLUNTEERS
By Deb Rosenbaum
This year's show had a sparkle and
high level of professionalism that can only be
accomplished by a lot of hard work. Art Kauai 2000
planning begins early in the year as Board members
work out dates, gallery commitments and evaluate
possible jurors. The real work, however, comes in
the week preceding the opening and requires long
hours of volunteer effort.
I was constantly amazed by the energy
and time people put out for Art Kauai this year;
not for personal gain, but for the love of art and
the positive experience that comes from working
together with people who share your passion. I know
most of us take great pride in the finished
product. This work was done by a wonderful, diverse
group of folks. They do it for themselves, all KSA
members and the community at large because it is
our calling, interest and desire; however, it
should never be taken for granted.
The following volunteers are
appreciated and valued as contributors of their
time, creativity, expertise and sweat! KSA is only
as good as our members. Mahalo nui loa!

to tourists and the residents of Kauai. (And PLEASE
forgive me if I left anyone out!!!)
Please join us in helping with future
shows. There are jobs of all varieties and time
commitments. You can increase your professionalism
as an artist by learning about how an art exhibit
is put together, you'll have fun and make some
friends for life. We welcome all members to attend
our Board meetings and provide valued input.
