In review BYTE ME: A DIGITAL CHALLENGE
Billions of pixels and more than a few megabytes (along with a little paint and some other traditional materials), were created and manipulated by 28 Kauai artists resulting in the 89 works on display in this KSA sponsored show of digital art open to all adult Kauai artists. Digital art, for the purpose of this exhibition, was defined as artwork that had been entirely or partially created using digital technology, with an emphasis on (but not limited to) the creative use of computer software. The exhibition featured digital painting and photography, computer-based illustration, digitally manipulated photographs, digital video art, fractals and algorithmic imagery, digital manipulations of traditionally created art, digital montages and collages, prints and mixed media with digital elements, and 3D work with digital enhancements. In conjunction with the exhibit, 21 artists participated in a workshop and demonstration of Adobe Photoshop Elements software with Kauai digital artist Tom Grollman. KSA, with support from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, also sponsored a free public lecture and demonstration with digital artist Jan Hathaway, a digital media and graphics educator at Kapiolani Community College on Oahu. Ms. Hathaway discussed digital art as fine art, and showed examples of her own work, including a step-by-step demonstration on how they were created. KSA thanks the participating artists and hardworking volunteers who made this exhibition possible (with special kudos to Carol Ann Davis who saw her initial concept for the show through to completion). Secial thanks also to Tom Grollman, Jan Hathaway, and to Kukui Grove Center for the exhibition space. |
