Oneness

Reverend Koho Takata

Hello, everyone! This is my first article of the Kapaa Hongwanji’s newsletter.  At first, let me introduce myself. I am Rev. Koho Takata. I came to Hawaii on October, 1995. Since then, I was one of many ministers at the Hawaii Betsuin. While at the Betsuin, I was supported and learned so much from the other ministers and the many members about the Nembutsu life.

As of June 1, 1998, I was assigned to Kapaa Hongwanji. Since Kapaa Hongwanji is a single minister temple, I have to take care of everything by myself. This was a change from Betsuin where there were 6 ministers and each minister was in charge of a special field. However, at Kapaa Hongwanji I will be able to do things I was not able to do at the Hawaii Betsuin. However, this is my first experience to have a single minister temple. I need everyone’s help and support. May I ask for your help, support and guidance!

As part of first job at the Kapaa Hongwanji, I am writing a newsletter. I decided to change the name from "Spot Light" to "Oneness," because we are always one and together with Amida Buddha. Amida Buddha saves all of us equally and without any discriminations.

Also, Kapaa Hongwanji Women’s Association will have its 85 year Anniversary this year and Kapaa Hongwanji Mission will celebrate its 80 year Anniversary in 2002. We need every one to come together and form one united temple so that Kapaa Hongwanji will be everything for your family, community, and island. If we will concentrate on oneness, Kapaa Hongwanji Mission will be our spiritual home. So, I humbly ask for everyone’s help and guidance.

As you know, we are observing Rennyo Shonin’s 500th Memorial Anniversary in this year. He was the 8th chief abbot of the Honpa Hongwanji, recognized for his innovative efforts and expansion of Jodo Shinshu. If it was not for his efforts, the Hongwanji would not be here in Hawaii. Through Rennyo Shonin’s innovative spirit, I want to do my best in everything I undertake.

Furthermore, Rennyo Shonin expanded the importance of "companions and fellow Nembutsu practicers" in his earnest propagation of "On-dobo, On-dogyo." He believed that we are all fellow Nembutsu practicers walking in Shinran Shonin’s True Nembutsu Way. Let us therefore have this thought in our hearts at all times and grow and work together through the spirit of Rennyo Shonin.
