The Summer Program

Summer Dharma School is an activity- based program that combines Buddhism and Japanese American culture in a fun and safe environment.

We will focus on the basic, every day Buddhist way of life. The children will experience Buddhism through hands-on art and craft projects, perform a Dharma play, stories and discussions, etc. Our goal is to help students think and learn about the ways in which Buddhism affect their daily lives, and to help them incorporate Buddhist teachings into their family life.

We are fortunate to have a talented people helping with this program. Kapaa Hongwanji Dharma School teacher, Wanda Costa & School teacher Roberta Yanagawa are coordinating the program. Also, Dharma School teacher Thelma Tsukamoto will teach students as program director, and our former Dharma School students (age18-up) will assist the program director. Ladies of Kapaa Hongwanji Women=s Association will teach the Bon Dance, and resident minister Reverend Koho Takata will supervise all the programs. Other resource people will join the program.

What to Bring

Please send your child(ren) with a backpack and lunch, except on Fridays. Nutritious snacks, juice, and water will be provided daily, and hot lunch will be provided every Friday. Also please bring an Onenju for the morning & afternoon services and a towel for morning stretches and bon dance lessons. Please do not bring games and toys from home, such as gameboys, scooters or skateboards. Please be sure to label all your children=s belongings, especially clothing.

Parent Participation

We encourage families to participate in the morning or afternoon services, and activities if your schedule permits. Parent participation can include leading activities, assisting teachers, organizing materials, sorting artwork, providing supervision during free time, daily set up and clean up, helping with the open house and other duties as needed. Your assistance is greatly appreciated by the children and allows us to keep tuition fees affordable.
